PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL--August 5, 2013—The Puerto Rico Tourism Company and NEC Series PGA TOUR Latinoamérica confirmed the return of the Puerto Rico Classic presented by Merrill Lynch to the 2013 PGA TOUR Latinoamérica schedule. The event will be played October 7-13 and will return to the venerable East Course at Dorado Beach Resort.

The Puerto Rico Classic presented by Merrill Lynch will kick off the second half of the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica season as the race for the five Web.com Tour cards heats up. “We’re delighted to confirm the Puerto Rico Classic presented by Merrill Lynch on the 2013 NEC Series-PGA TOUR Latinoamérica schedule,” said Jack Warfield, President of the NEC Series-PGA TOUR Latinoamérica.  “Puerto Rico is a great partner of the PGA TOUR and we’re pleased that the new administration has agreed to continue supporting the event. Our partnership showcases all the island has to offer and we look forward to this year’s event leading the final stretch for the five Web.com Tour cards.”

“We are excited to kick-off the second-half of the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica season in Puerto Rico,” said Sidney Wolf, Chairman of the Puerto Rico Classic and Puerto Rico Open on the PGA TOUR. “The Puerto Rico Golf Association and The Puerto Rico Tourism Company recognize the value of the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica platform and its ability to help grow the game while also showcasing everything Puerto Rico and Latin America has to offer to the world. Our new relationship with Merrill Lynch is one we’re looking forward to as we work to meet their goals and grow our relationship.”

“Our clients in the Caribbean and Latin America are extremely important to us and the region is vital to our growth.  We are proud to support this high-caliber event here in Puerto Rico and to continue to enhance our relationships with the community and with the PGA TOUR.  We are delighted to participate,” said Jeff Ransdell, managing director and market executive for Southeast Market, Caribbean, & Latin America for Merrill Lynch Wealth Management.

“At the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, we are very pleased to be part of PGA TOUR Latinoamérica.   This kind of event contributes to the island’s economic progress and development”, said Ingrid Rivera Rocafort, Executive Director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.  “This is the second time this event comes to Puerto Rico, which shows the good relationship we have had with the team”, the Director said.

The 2012 edition of the Puerto Rico Classic was won by Sebastián Vázquez in a Sunday battle with fellow young upstart, Jorge Fernández-Valdés. The East Course at Dorado Beach Resort was an instant player favorite last year and is a legendary venue that hosted the World Cup in 1961 and 1994 in addition to events on the LPGA TOUR and Champions Tour.  Originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the course underwent a major renovation by Robert Trent Jones Jr. in the last few years prior to the inaugural Puerto Rico Classic.
